Posted April 5, 2022: Back in 1997, Marianne and Jim Rennie were doing the wedding and memorial service circuit. They sang some Rogers and Hammerstein show tunes at music festivals in central Ohio, along with songs by Dionne Warwick, Sonny and Cher, other pop groups.

Two of the most popular pieces came from Phantom of the Opera, an Andrew Lloyd Webber success, opening in 1986, with moral teachings that love between two people cannot be forced. It also highlights the need for every human to be loved. These two concepts collide in the form of Erik (the Phantom), who has a fierce, one-sided and possessive love for Christine.

One piece, a romantic duet, All I Ask of You, featuring Christine and Raoul, her true love, who vows to protect her from the Phantom (Marianne and Jim), has been sung at many weddings.
[An operatic pop piece, the two main characters dialogue with themes such as commitment and romance]

The second piece, a soprano solo by Christine, Wishing You were Somehow Here Again, has been sung by Marianne at several memorial services.
[Christine sings at her father's grave on the fateful day before the opera performance that will decide her fate, singing her desire to be with her father with such yearning and sincerity that it’s clear how lost she is in the world without him. “You were once a friend and father, then my world was shattered.” She had never truly healed from her loss, and it seems she probably never will]

Posted January 15, 2022: With our 65th High School Reunion on the horizon in 2024, it's inevitable we would look back at our respective lives and contemplate what we've been through. Poets use the analogy of "Seasons" to capture the meaning and relevance to the phases and years of our lives. Clearly, as the poets would say, the Class of 1959 is in the "Winter Season" of our earthly existence. Coincidentally, Miles and Cheri Cohen sent us an appropriate and wonderful piece that we'd like to share with you entitled "And Then It's Winter"! which can be reached by "clicking on" the aforementioned title. We are blessed to have had each other as "fellow travelers" in the odyssey of our Lives. We hope you enjoy this piece as much as we have!

Also, Miles Cohen has formed a Family Endowment Fund to support worthy students from Western PA who seek a Business Degree to the University of Pittsburgh. This year, the Award is going to a UHS graduate, Brandon Bell.

Special thanks to Josephine (Cooky) Gall Kennedy, Heleen Kirch Karpel and Diane Opaka Madzinski for all their good work in creating special Table Center Pieces. Cooky also provided the material for the Memorial Table where we honor the Deceased Classmates. The staff at Duck Hollow Golf Course commented that our decorations (which included Bales of Hay, Cornstalks & Pumpkins) exceeded anything they'd ever seen there: even including Weddings!

The Friday nite weather permitted the Hay Ride around the grounds and background/dancing music was able provided by Jack Beachley. Saturday nite at the Ramada Inn kicked it into an even higher gear where Johnny Seaton and his band, "Bad Behavior" (all the way from Washington DC area) "Rocked our Reunion".

Posted July 27, 2019: Uniontown is again mentioned in the National News. Today, the Wall Street Journal on p A14 had mention of a 14 year old resident of Uniontown, Rodney Gallagher, a basketball player, who aspires to have his Instagram account "verified" with a blue check mark that confirms his legitimacy as a social-media sensation. While admitting I have no idea whatsoever as to the significance of this aspiration, I'm proud that the WSJ has recognized that "what happens in Uniontown, resonates around the world". Or something like that!

Posted October 11, 2017: Bonnie Roderick Stevens lives in Northern California near the wild fires threatening that area. The following is her first-person update as of yesterday. Bonnie has medical training.

Hi all,
The smoke is really bad right now and there is very little containment of the many fires that are destroying so much of the wine country along with many homes and businesses. The fire is about an hour from me and the smoke is unreal. I volunteered this morning in out-patient surgery. Many wore masks and put masks on the patients too. The smoke woke me about 12:30AM Monday morning and I thought the hill below me was on fire. The wind was unreal so I got up to close the windows. So many people have been evacuated. Temporary housing even includes our civic center near to me. But, for now, other than the smoke, I am fine. I cannot see the beautiful hills out my living room window as they are obscured by the thick smoke. Love to all, Bonnie

When I called Tom's number, his wife advised me that Tom had died last September and had request NO OBIT be published. So, with continued sadness, another Classmate's name is added to our Deceased List.

We've received Sign Up Sheets from folks as far away as Mike Samuels (the FIRST Sign-Up Sheet returned!) and Barry Holchin in California, Clark Martin's coming in from Colorado and Dave Balling will be journeying from Wisconsin. From the Southland, Doris Bishoff Swanson is coming from Florida. Folks we haven't seen for a while include Jim Sarson, Jim Wright, Carol Coughenour Paquette and Larry Swenglish. Barb Komlo Fee would like to come but is leery of the drive. If any of you from N. Ohio have some extra space in the car, she'd like to make the trip with you! We're expecting a lavish buffet and good company for our little soiree. See you in a month!!

Over 500 guests attended this 5th Annual Ceremony held at PSU Fayette Campus. Our class reserved a table to honor Bill and I'd like to thank those who were able to attend. Representing the class of '59 were: Tom Ferris, Leo Caromano, Ken Glozer, Diane Opaka and yours truly. Representing Bill's East End neighborhood and the current UHS football team were: Darius Pratt and his grandmother, Joan Tracy plus several other guests. The University of Minnesota did a "first class" deed in purchasing a colorful program ad, sending a letter to the presentors from their AD which was read aloud with a live old radio interview by George Von Benko [ co-founder of FCSHOF ] as well. Also, a gift was made to the UHS Athletic Dept. and current coach honoring Bill. It was truly an emotional affair, made more so, by the untimely passing of Bill's younger brother, Chuck, a few weeks before the event. Many of our classmates responded that they would have come as well except distance, schedule conflicts etc. precluded them. Thanks to all who came to support Bill and his remaining family.

The book, written by Larry Engelmann, includes eye-witness reports of the events occurring in early 1975 just before the North Vietnamese took over the South. Joe's contribution, the second narrative in the book, tells of his harrowing escape from Danang. Quite an experience! You'll enjoy the "read"!

Bob was recovering from a major case of laryngitis and chest cold. Hmm, that's not supposed to happen to Floridians!! We noted how often we meet someone from Fayette County or having ties to that area. In discussing the Birthday Bash set for October this year, we discovered we are both "Geminis" (having been born in June only 5 days apart) with Bob being my "senior". Published by the Hoover Institute of Stanford University, Ken had as his sponsor, Secretary George Schultz, who chairs the Energy Policy Committee at Hoover. As Ken noted to me, after this book gets into the public eye, he will not be visiting any of the "corn" states anytime soon! Corn ethanol is a major boondoggle that is welfare for corn farmers while driving up the cost of food and contributing to the overall food shortage in the world. Other than that, it's a laudable undertaking! To see a video of Ken's presentation, click the link on the UHS1959 Front Page.

It was suggested we could use as an "excuse" the celebration of the 70th birthdays (in 2011) of many of our classmates. Accordingly, I set off to line up some venues. First, I will be shooting for either the first of October or last of September 2011 so that we can witness the beautiful fall foliage of Western PA. Second, we are looking at the reception hall at the Duck Hollow Golf Course ( about 1/2 mile from the New Salem Rd) as our Saturday night site. Third, based on many inputs, we will also assess making this a "two-nighter" to include the Friday preceding the Duck Hollow outing. More on this later. In the meantime, be aware of our thinking and give thought to attending our "intermediate", 70th BIRTHDAY Reunion!!

The trip started in Uniontown and involved visiting Luray Caverns (Luray, VA) then onto a full day at the Gettysburg Battlefield. We had a unique way of touring the Battlefield - we used "Segways" that allowed us to cover miles of battlefield "up close and personal". A bus tour simply would not have been the same. Then, on to York, PA to tour the Harley-Davidson plant (a "must see" for motorcycle enthusiasts). From York, we went to State College, PA so that Charles could re-live his college days at Penn State. Great weather and beautiful country roads made for a memorable time.

Posted September 28, 2009: Whew!! Well, the smoke has cleared and the dust has settled from our BIG 5-0 Reunion held this past weekend. Many attendees declared it to be the "best ever". High praise, indeed, considering the wonderful reunions we've experienced previously. Many thanks to Tony Adinolfi for helping with the mementos, coordinating the School tour and physical work in getting set up; Gerry Cunningham for securing and deploying the "adult beverages" at the Klay winery (along with Mike Samuels); Joanne Lemansky Rae and Ruthie Friend Mochel for the creative table decorations at the winery; Fritz Conaway for helping coordinate the School tour; Jerry Rehanek for "donating" his DJ services at The Summit; Joe Hrezo for hosting Coach Al Brodhag; and Bill Mosser for his "donating" the set of 2 CD's with the UHS Reunion logo given to each graduate. Joe Hrezo and Sam Beckett were also helpful in suggesting ideas for the "momento" consisting of the recreation of a Ben Franklin 50 cent piece from 1959 with an impression of the High School on the reverse side (all encased in acrylic). Certainly a keepsake! Much work went into making the BIG 5-0 a special occasion and it showed. The turnout was fantastic with Mike Samuels, Bob Sonoga and Barry Holchin garnering honors for having come the furthest (California in all 3 cases). Tom Mirolli won honors for the Class of '58 for having come from Georgia! Leda Brauns Leeds and Ron Pompei were "first-timers" at the Reunion and we trust they will make it a habit to attend in the future. A few, such as Georgetta Kohrman Nelson, were recovering from recent physical issues but still managed to "gut it out"! Man, what dedication! Kudos go to the ALL the attendees who, by coming, made the Reunion a warm, wonderful experience that was truly unforgettable!! Thank you!!!

Posted: December 8, 2008: Good Morning to you all! This is John again, Martha's son writing to you for I wanted to personally send a note to each one of you who I received direct notes from regarding my mother. I want to pass along a note to all of you, that I now consider my friends and of course former friends of my mother. I had sent this note out to all my other friends and family. Jess if you want to post on the UHS bulletin board that would be ok with us. Mom loved you all and when I read your notes to her she smiled and remembered each of you and even recalled special times that she mentioned and elaborated on them with me. I noticed in the news herald online that her name was spelled "Marina" they will re-print tomorrow...oh well...stuff happens....lol lol. Our prayers have been answered and I come to you with a saddened heart to inform you that my mother has joined the Lord and all those loved ones gone before us. She is at everlasting Peace at this time and my heart is filled with joy; the tears are only for the days ahead that she will be missed dearly. Please know that we appreciated all of your prayers and know that me and my father and Rose are doing ok. The calling hours for my mom will be at Orlando funeral home 440-943-2466 @29550 Euclid Ave. Wickliffe OH on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 and the funeral mass will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church @ 29850 Euclid Ave Wickliffe OH 44092 9:30am Mass and Mercy dinner @ Yacht club following funeral in Mentor. I apologize for mass email but wanted to get the word out and obituary will only be in News Herald paper tomorrow or you can check online @ www.news-herald.com . My mom's donations will go to St. Jude Children's Hospital for as you know she wore the shirt I gave her repeatedly "Nothing you do for children is ever wasted!" She wore at my party last year. Mom also contributed to American Diabetes Association - Gift of Hope organization. Thank you and God Bless you and for those I may not see by year end , please have an Amazing Christmas!
Love, John and Family.
Posted: November 10,2008: Sorry to report that Martha Joseph Duke will not be with us for the upcoming 50th reunion. We recieved this note from her son, John:
Good Afternoon Jess and friends,
I am Martha (Joseph) Duke's son, John, and I know my mom would love to attend next years reunion; unfortunately, she has been battling issues with her liver for some time now. She has had many procedures done and has given a good fight since April of this year. We brought her home a few weeks ago and have enjoyed many special moments. Mom does not want to go down the liver transplant road since that would not solve all issues she has right now. She is such a strong woman and is loved by so many. I could not be more proud of her. She is sleeping by me now restfully but there may only be days left with her. I am blessed to have had such wonderful parents and I felt the need to let you all know as her former classmates. Your prayers are welcome and I just wanted to convey the situation. She is so at peace with the Lord and we are all very religious and with the Lord in so many ways. Not to worry; my father, sister Rose and I are continuing to take great care of her and keep her comfortable.

Hugs to all, and have a blessed day!
John Duke

Posted November 24, 2007: Just a quick update on my recent visit to Uniontown. Went back for my 66th! Wow, what a bunch of "old" farts we all are! Took my bride of 40 years and my youngest boy who had never seen the old haunts. Stayed up in our beloved mountains [ate at Fabrizi's] and, of course, took in the Stiller/Brown game [a real nail biter]. Saw some family and friends and had a very nice time although it was cloudy and rainy. Main Street looks great these days. We visited the Vets memorial by the courthouse and General Marshall park. Lots of familiar names on those memorial bricks! At our last reunion, I visited the Flight 93 memorial in Somerset. It was one of the most emotional experiences of my life. Stopped by UHS with my 34 year old son but we missed basketball practice. As most of you know the debate goes on about a major renovation of our old school. Paul Bortz [George's younger brother], my old Stockton Ave. neighbor, just joined the school board so that's good [I think?]. Oh well, I'll sign off for now, but want to wish each and every one of you a "Great" holiday season and hope we're all still "kickin" when we reunite for our 50th!! Miles Cohen, alias "Tundra Man" of Minnesota!

Posted September 6, 2007: Imagine my surprise to find our fair hometown, "Uniontown, PA", mentioned in the Editorial Page of a major, international newspaper! While traveling in Europe, I read the English newspaper, "The International Herald Tribune" (which is owned by the New York Times). On the editorial page of the Tuesday, September 4th edition, was a write-up entitled "When Burgers got Bigger". The gist of the article was the the birth of the "Big Mac" (noted as having been introduced in UNIONTOWN, PA) ushered in the "Age of Increasing Girths"!! As has been noted elsewhere, Uniontown businessman, Jim Delligatti, owner of the McDonalds in the old Uniontown shopping mall on Morgantown Road, created the Big Mac, showed it could be a success and eventually saw the product promoted nationwide by "Mickey D". Once again, our little "burgh" has achieved world-wide notice and renown. A trip to the Uniontown Wal-Mart will convince you that our local efforts to usher in the "growing girth" have been sustained by later generations who continue to push the boundaries of waist and belt size!

Posted January 31st, 2007 : Well, another Class Cruise has been concluded.....and it was wonderful!! Photos of the 2007 Cruise are posted for your review. When last I gave you a report, we were at the Grand Cayman Islands. The shopping here was Marvelous!! Some of the party went swimming with the Manta Rays (that takes courage!), others went cycling and others took in the ambience of the capital, George Town. During the Cruise, there was a ship-wide 3 day competition of Trivial Pursuit pitting the women against the men. Not surprisingly, the MEN won the contest! The stage show one evening featured an hour-long presentation of Rock 'n' Roll songs and stage dancing. One of the photos shows Jim Rennie with a performer from the show. GO JIM! The next night the ship had a Rock 'n' Roll contest for identifying songs and performers. Needless to say, your Class Team WON!! Our dancing wasn't so bad either! Mike Samuels made many new friends (as he always does!) and is already looking forward to the NEXT cruise. We were treated like Royalty throughout the Cruise. Celebrity Lines really has its act together. Let me know if you're interested in going the next time. Bon Voyage!

The Celebrity Lines is a smaller ship than the Royal Caribbean ship we had last year. This smaller size is intentional and is geared to FANTASTIC service from all the Staff. Our cabin has a BUTLER plus other room attendants. The food has been out of this world (particularly the desserts!) Mike Samuels and Jim Rennie had a great adventure rafting in Jamaica. Today, we will be either biking, snorkeling, shopping or "whatever" in George Town. Some have even inquired as to one of those neat "off-shore" banking accounts so famous in the Cayman Islands! Will update you all later on the balance of the Cruise.

The Italians can cook, but they can't count!" With that piece of wisdom ringing in my ears, I proceeded to wander thru the crowds and saw Fritz Conaway doing Police Auxilary duty. Bucky Mangello was the bartender. Just like the good ol' days! Also saw Jim Rennie and Martha Washnock Piszczor. Be aware that "Downtown Uniontown" is making a comeback. Posted June 7, 2006: Our Class Scholarship of $3000 went to Courtney Sanner. Daughter of Doug and Paula Sanner of U'town, Courtney was a member of the National Honor Society, the Marching Band Silks, The Highest Honor Roll and the French Club. She also was involved with the school newspaper, team captain of Math Competition, and was chosen by the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce as the Student of the Month. Further, she competed in Cross Country running, Basketball plus Track & Field. She was team captain in all three sports. To show how "well-rounded" she was, she also placed 4th in her Class with a 4.10 GPA (by taking College Courses, one can achieve higher than a 4.0 score in a course). Courtney will be attending Wheeling Jesuit University where she intends to major in Physical Therapy. Clearly, the winner of our Class Scholarship is a worthy recipient. Posted July 5, 2005: Bernie Piszczor had surgery to remove a cancer in his stomach in December 2004. He successfully came through this surgery albeit with a weight loss of 100 pounds!! The resultant chemotherapy, rendered in Uniontown, however, almost killed him. I visited with Bernie and Martha (Washnock) this past weekend and got the details. He had to be airlifted to Pittsburgh to get the treatment necessary to keep him alive. He is now recovering from the "chemo" and has a good prognosis. Bernie asked to have this info posted. He recommends annual checkups (his stomach cancer was discovered during a routine colonoscopy). From my standpoint, I recommend that until patients get airlifted from Pittsburgh to Uniontown for treatment, it's better just to go to Pittsburgh from the outset! Bernie and Martha don't have email; but, you can get their postal address from the Address Section of the website. I know they would appreciate hearing from you and to be remembered in your prayers.

Posted May 26, 2005: Last night, May 25th, Tony Adinolfi and I presented (2) scholarships in the name of the Class of 1959.
The first, general scholarship, for $3000 was presented to Ken Hager, Smock. Ken graduated in the top 20% of his class, was a member of the National Honor Society, achieved the rank of Eagle scout (with 56 merit badges!), and wants to study at California University to become a teacher and return to Fayette County to teach in the local school system.
The second award (for a person who wants a career in Nursing), one that Tony Adinolfi personally funds, was awarded to Ashley Van Bremen of Farmington.
Both Tony and I were proud to represent our fine Class and we challenged other graduating classes to form similar Scholarship Funds to support deserving UHS graduates.

My thanks to Tony, Dave Balling, Miles Cohen and Larry Roberts for their assistance in choosing a winner for the Class Scholarship. If you would like to participate in the selection of next years recipient, let me know.

There is an article on the front sports page of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette on 2/4/05 which headlines "RICH TRADITION DRIVES RED RAIDERS, THEIR FANS". It starts out saying that their new coach Rob Kezmarsky played at Laurel Highlands and led the WPIAL in scoring his senior year. However, as a youth his parents took him to Uniontown basketball games because they had gotten caught up in the mystique of Uniontown Boys Basketball. It advises that even though the population has gone from 30,000 to 12,000 the fan base is still outstanding and there is a waiting list for season tickets. It indicates that tonight they play Albert Gallatin for a share of the section title. If they win, it will be their 42nd section championship, the most in WPIAL history. It goes on to name some former stars such as Chuck Muncie and how he changed the spelling of his name from Munsey to Muncie. It highlights some biography on Abe Everhart, Stu lantz, Charlie Hayatt, Don Yates, Ron Sepic and Terrance Vaughns. To read the actual article go to: www.post-gazette.com/sports Thanks, Leo

Many of our class of '59 classmates, like myself, are living far away from our home-of-origin. We stay connected to our roots by new tech things such as this site. Given we just had our 45th reunion!! and we now have the great music site on this website, I thought I'd bring back some more nostalgia[now that I'm retired]for many classmates who miss the unique lingo of our childhood. Living on the Tundra of Minnesota[Chippewa Sioux for Great Water]the land of 10,000 lakes, 73 Tornadoes, and 40 below temps and having taught a few dem's and youns to the Swedes up here over the years, here are a few memorable W.Pa. sayings!Chimley is the part of a fireplace projecting above the rooof! Dubya-the letter W! Dupa-your proverbial ass! Ding-a dent! En nat-like I drink Irn City "en nat"! Filum-used in a camera! Git- to acquire like I'd like to "git" Stiller season tickets! Haus like yins or "youns" need to "git" out of the "haus" more! Ignernt like in Youns are "ignernt" jag offs! Libary is where the books are stored! Melk is a white nutritional liquid! Posted September 7, 2004 : Greetings from "Hurricane Central". Hurricane Frances has just "blown over" and normality is being restored slowly. Living on the ocean has many benefits but living with Hurricanes is NOT one of them! We are getting electricity, water and phone service back after several days outage. The elevators in the condo are still NOT working. I will either die from the exertion of walking up 10 floors or get myself into fantastic shape. We'll watch to see what happens first! Many of our Class Brethern are in the state. Harry Blake and Doris Bishoff Swanson are in the southern part of Florida, Stan Repa and Eleanor Jenkins are in Orlando, Jon Walters is in St. Augustine, Barbara Parnell and Ruthie Friend Mochel are north of Tampa. The successful recipient will receive their notice at the Schools Awards Assembly on May 19th, 2004. If any of you have the time to be there, the school would welcome your presence. Posted March 26th, 2004: Some group of advertisers have discovered our site. I find it interesting to review the panoply of products and "services" being hawked! Oh well, this is just another indication of advancing age. Please take the time to scroll thru all this "noise" to read the other "postings". Take care and see you all in July.

Posted March 21, 2004: After much delay, the postcards announcing the upcoming 45th reunion have been sent both to the Classes of '59 & '58. The "returns" from "bad addresses" from the Class of '58 mailing list will require a lot of work if we are to get the message to that group. Please advise if you have any mailing addresses or email addresses of members of the Class of '58. We expect a strong turnout so be sure to have marked your calendars for July 23 & 24. Thanks.

Posted January 28th, 2004 : Ruthie Friend Mochel and John have beaten the impending rush by "Baby Boomers" to retire to Florida by buying their own little piece of heaven at 10404 Moshie Lane San Antonio, Florida 33576 (25 miles north of Tampa) 352-588-9282 Given the winter being experienced up north, their move south was none too soon!!

Posted June 12th, 2003:Several of you have asked about the status of the recipients of past scholarship awards. Lois Rossi, UHS Guidance Counselor, gave me the following update: 2000: Melissa Latsnic enrolled in the Nursing Program @ Waynesburg College where she completed her first year. During the Summer of 2001, she was in a serious car accident and has not returned to school. 2001: Christine Elias enrolled at West Virginia Univ. She has completed her second year while maintaining a 3.2gpa. She is returning for the next term. During the summer months, she is self-employed. She is committed to her education and all her summer revenues go to college expenses. 2002: Steve Kovach has completed his first year at West Virginia University and is planning to return next year. 2003: Our new recipients Brett Schimmel will attend California Univ of Pa while Nicole Novak will attend West Virginia Univ. All of us that have contributed to the Class Fund can take pride in the boost we have given these deserving young people. While you are thinking about it, "Click on" to the Scholarship portion of our site and send a check to a most deserving cause...you'll feel good for the experience!!!

Posted May 30th,2003: I had the honor of presenting (2) scholarship awards at the 5/21-03 Awards Assembly at UHS. The $3000 award went to Brett Schimmel and a $1000 award went to Nicole Novak. This is the first time we have made two awards. Nicole was so close in the voting to Brett that we felt we should give her acknowledgement for her performance. Thanks to Tony Adinolfi,Dave Balling, Miles Cohen, and Larry Roberts for their evaluations of the many candidates who were vying for the award. Only one other Class has such a scholarship program. Ain't this Class of '59 Great?!!

Posted May 11,2003-Thanks for the input regarding next years reunion. The majority of the responses noted interest in holding the reunion during the latter part of Sept or first part of Oct 2004. While in Uniontown this month, I will check on possible sites and see what we can find. Report to follow.
